2019/20 Squad Announcement: Goalkeepers

Ahead of the start of the new season, I felt it best to round up exactly how we’re lining up going into the new season, by posting a series of position-by-position reviews of our squad depth and the players that we’re relying on in each area of the pitch. I’m starting with goalkeepers, and this one will be short, as we have two senior goalkeepers at the club.

#1. Loris KariusScreen Shot 2018-01-19 at 18.28.52.png

With the addition of Gianluigi Donnarumma last year, Karius sat out a bit more last year than he maybe would have liked, conceding 21 goals in 18 starts across all competitions, keeping 7 clean sheets, and clocking an average rating of 7.13. At 26, I firmly believe that Karius is in his peak, and still has the scope to provide a massive influence within the squad, and the ability to a job between the sticks.

Last Season: P: 18 | C: 21 | CS: 7 | Avg: 7.13

#16. Gianluigi Donnarumma

Following his arrival from AC Milan, Donnarumma became an integral part of our squad, featuring heavily in both the League and Europe, Donnarumma exhibited control of his penalty area, and an ability to clean up behind the defensive line, and kick-start attacks by recycling possession. Conceding just 34 goals in 30 games, and keeping 10 clean sheets, Donnarumma is in a perfect position to stake a claim for the starting spot.

Last Season: P: 30 | C: 34 | CS: 10 | Avg: 7.26

Overall, I think we’re looking pretty strong in goal, with two top-quality men between the sticks, each with a good record, and i’m pretty confident that no matter which of them I choose on a game-by-game basis, we’ll be solid in goal.
